📖 Chess Guide

🎯 Objective

The goal of chess is to checkmate your opponent's king. This means putting the opponent's king in a position where it is under attack (in check) and cannot escape.

♟️ How Pieces Move

Pawn
Moves forward one square (or two squares on first move). Captures diagonally forward. Cannot move backward.
Rook
Moves any number of squares horizontally or vertically. Cannot jump over pieces.
Knight
Moves in an L-shape (2 squares one way, 1 square perpendicular). Can jump over pieces.
Bishop
Moves any number of squares diagonally. Cannot jump over pieces.
Queen
Moves any number of squares in any direction (horizontal, vertical, or diagonal). Most powerful piece.
King
Moves one square in any direction. Cannot move into check. Most important piece - protect it!

🎮 How to Play

Controls:

  • Click a piece to select it (your pieces are white)
  • Green squares show valid moves
  • Click a green square to move your piece there
  • Click another piece to change selection
  • The AI (Black) will move automatically after your turn

⚠️ Important Rules

  • Check: When your king is under attack, you must get out of check immediately.
  • Checkmate: When your king is in check and cannot escape - game over!
  • Stalemate: When you have no legal moves but your king is not in check - it's a draw.
  • Illegal Moves: You cannot make a move that puts your own king in check.
  • Capturing: To capture an opponent's piece, move your piece onto their square.

💡 Tips for Beginners

  • Control the center of the board - it gives your pieces more mobility
  • Develop your pieces (knights and bishops) early in the game
  • Castle your king to safety when possible
  • Don't move the same piece multiple times in the opening
  • Think ahead - consider what your opponent might do
  • Protect your king at all costs
  • Use all your pieces - don't leave pieces undeveloped
